Nepal has many important religious sites but none more significant than Lumbini, the birthplace of the Buddha. Just a short flight from Kathmandu, the World Heritage Site can be toured in a day with the Maya Devi Temple and sacred garden being the focal spots for pilgrims.
If you're a keen bird watcher then Koshi Tappu should be high on your birding tick list. A peaceful haven in southeast Nepal its multitude of habitats provides a home for over 500 species of rare and exotic birds. Stay in a comfortable lodge and explore the reserve in the company of expert guides.
You don't have to take an epic trek to experience the Himalaya. The Langtang region and the Ganesh Himal are just a few hours drive from Kathmandu yet both have superb trekking trails with towering peaks, stunning viewpoints and welcoming Nepali villages. And better still, you'll often have the trail all to yourself.
You won't be running any scary rapids on the Seti, in fact, much of the time you can just dangle an oar in the water and gently drift along whilst enjoying the delightful scenery. Long, lazy lunch stops and an overnight stop at a stylish river camp complete the oh-so-relaxing experience.
Pokhara is the main town of the Annapurna region and the starting point for many treks. Spend a couple of nights and you can take a boat ride on Phewa Tal lake, wander the shops along the bustling waterfront or take a walk up to the World Peace Pagoda for sublime mountain views.
