Gorilla & Wildlife Walking Safari, Uganda

When our Marketing Assistant, Ashley, travelled to Uganda to research a new walking safari for Mountain Kingdoms he thought it would be an enjoyable trip, but he didn’t realise just how special it was going to be. In this video, Ashley shares his amazing experiences of tracking and observing gorillas and chimpanzees in the forests of Uganda, of walking amidst stunning scenery and of seeing leopard, elephant and other big game in the national parks of this beautiful country.

Ashley’s journey begins with a boat ride at Murchison Falls National Park with close-up views of the mighty Nile River spectacularly forcing its way through a narrow cleft in the rock. Travelling southwest, Ashley next visits Kibale National Park where he gets his first sighting of some of the local monkeys and stay’s in a delightful lodge in the forest. Kibale is considered one of the best places in the world to see chimpanzees in the wild and Ashley spent a full day observing a very entertaining family of chimpanzees in their natural habitat.

Rwenzori National Park, home to Africa’s third highest peak, is next on Ashley’s itinerary. Here he enjoys some great walks to viewpoints with commanding mountain views before travelling on to Queen Elizabeth Park – a renowned wildlife haven. Sightings of elephants, buffalo, lions and even a leopard make his time here a thrilling safari, comparable to any in Africa.

But, the most thrilling experience of all is yet to come, as Ashley joins a small group tracking mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Uganda is one of the few places in the world you can still see mountain gorillas in their natural habitat but even here their numbers are very small. The group follow their experienced ranger guide through dense undergrowth, but the exertions of the group are soon forgotten as they get their first sighting of a family of incredibly rare gorillas – an incredible ‘wow’ moment. As Ashley explains, getting up close to a family of gorillas and observing their daily life is an experience like no other. He was particularly taken with playful interaction between the mother, father and their little baby son and will never forget the privileged time he spent observing them.

All too soon it is time to say goodbye to the gorillas and for Ashley to move on to the final destination on his wildlife adventure. His last stop is Lake Mburo National Park where an early morning walking safari provides sightings of countless zebra, deer, cob and exotic birds.

Reflecting on his fantastic trip, Ashley’s highlights of Uganda was of course gorilla tracking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, but he also really enjoyed the captivating and varied landscapes of this hidden gem of Africa.
