Morocco Coastal Trek & Essaouira
Earlier in the year, our MD, Steve Berry, and a group of good friends, travelled to Morocco to experience our new coastal trek.
Starting in the eclectic and buzzing city of Marrakesh, they spent the evening exploring the maze-like alleys of the medina, shopping in the famous souks and meeting some fascinating local people, from snake charmers to fortune-tellers. After a restful night’s sleep in a local riad, Steve and his friends were then ready to begin their trek from the small town of Sidi Kakoui. Arriving around lunch time, they were greeted by some comical tree-climbing goats and their camel companions, before setting off on the first leg of their five day trek along the attractive coast.
The trails were varied, but easy-paced, following wide cliff paths, climbing rugged headlands and passing through remote Berber villages. Along the way they encountered all sorts of interesting sights such as holy shrines, local farmers and fishermen’s houses. Each night the group enjoyed a delicious Moroccan meal together before settling down in their tents on the peaceful, picturesque coastline.
After a fun-filled camel ride along the beach, the trek drew to a close and the group headed to Essaouira, a charming seaside port and a place Steve had longed to return to ever since his first trip there back in the 70’s. Here they explored the port on foot, and joined a local cookery class learning how to prepare a Moroccan taguine. Later on, the group experienced the utter relaxation of a traditional hammam, one of Steve’s personal highlights of the trip. Returning to Marrakesh they enjoyed a final night out in this captivating ancient city, bringing their holiday to a close.
Reflecting on his time in Morocco, Steve recommends this trip to anyone wanting an easy-going adventure with lots of winter sun.
