Silk Road to Samarkand

Uzbekistan is a destination full to the brim with intriguing culture, imposing historical monuments and thriving crafts industries.Three of Uzbekistan’s most important cities were significant stop-off points for traders, and to this day still offer a fascinating glimpse into the history of the Silk Road.

Earlier this year, Flights Manager, April, joined a departure of our Silk Road to Samarkand tour to gain a better understanding of what our clients will experience on this trip.

April spent three days in most of the impressive cities she visited; Tashkent, Khiva, Bukhara and Samarkand.The first day was spent with the group’s expert, knowledgeable guide discovering the history, culture and architecture of the remarkable buildings and places they encountered. The second was spent at leisure, giving the group ample opportunity to go back to their favourite monuments to explore further, buy souvenirs at the vibrant markets and spend some unforgettable time with the locals. A highlight was visiting the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ichan Kala in Khiva, an incredible walled city with many architectural masterpieces, including ornate mosques, mausoleums and madrassas.

For their third day in each location the group, accompanied by their guide, went sightseeing further afield to places such as the Kyzylkum desert.Here they explored the ruins of ancient fortresses with a backdrop of incredible desert scenery, followed by lunch in a traditional yurt - a truly unique experience and the best way to be immersed in Uzbek culture.

Throughout their time in Uzbekistan, April and her group stayed in charming hotels carefully selected for their comfort and location. They also enjoyed traditional Uzbek cuisine at local restaurants and even had the chance to watch Uzbek bread being freshly baked in a clay oven, which of course they then enjoyed with their meals.

Reflecting on her experience, April says her trip was ‘an inspiring and memorable experience’, leaving her with ‘long lasting memories.’
