The Kingdom of Mustang Trek - Nepal

In the summer of 2017, Mountain Kingdoms’ managing director, Steve Berry, travelled to the stunning region of Mustang in Nepal in order to create a spectacular new trekking holiday – the Kingdom of Mustang Trek. Steve’s journey began in Kathmandu, the vibrant capital of Nepal, before reaching Kagbeni, a very pretty Tibetan-style village and the starting point for the trek ahead.

A visit to the region of Mustang offers so many highlights. These include spectacular panoramic views, mysterious history and a fascinating culture. Each day Steve trekked to a new village or area of Mustang, not only taking in the unforgettable views, but also having the opportunity to learn about ancient legends and intriguing cave dwellings.

One of the standout moments of his trip was reaching the little-visited walled city of Lo Manthang, an ambition for many years.Lo Manthang, the only square-walled city in Nepal, is a fascinating place with narrow streets and houses built adjoining the city’s walls. Dotted amongst these are three major temples, decorated with large statues of different Buddhas, which are a very impressive and a welcome sight after the long trek.

After spending ample time exploring Lo Manthang, Steve began the journey back to Jomsom.The trek returns to Jomsom using a different route, meaning there are stunning new views of the Annapurna range to enjoy including Dhaulagiri, the seventh highest peak in the world.

During his time on trek in Mustang, Steve stayed in comfortable lodges, all which were full of character and the perfect place to rest and recuperate after a long day trekking.

Reflecting on his time in the magical kingdom of Mustang, Steve feels that this is one of the best places he has been trekking and that he would “go back like a shot!”
