Zanskar Dream Trek
Steve Berry calls the Dream Trek ‘a fantastic trip - one of the best treks I’ve ever done’. But this isn’t simply because of the breathtaking scenery, remote monasteries and magically-named passes, but also because it has great personal meaning for him as this video explains.
The origins of the Dream Trek go back 70 years to a 1946 expedition led by Steve’s father who was attempting to make the first ascent of Mount Kun – the highest mountain in Ladakh. Sadly, the team didn’t make the summit but, at the end of the expedition they did visit remote and mysterious Ringdom Gompa - as you can see from the original film footage. Steve still has the three gifts that were presented to his father by the head lama there.
In 1981, Steve and his brother followed in their father’s footsteps to Nun Kun but this time they ‘finished the job he’d started’ and successfully reached the summit. They too visited Ringdom Gompa after their climb and so began Steve’s enduring love affair with the region. He returned many times over the years; exploring remote valleys and gorges and searching for the perfect trekking route that he’d only ever dreamt off. And now he believes he’s created it – the Zanskar Dream Trek.
Recent footage from 2013 shows the incredible gorges, high passes and truly spectacular scenery that characterises the Dream Trek from its starting point at Ringdom right through to its end at Leh - 22 days later. It’s undoubtedly a long and challenging trek but excellent camping equipment, first-rate expedition staff, plentiful food and horse support make it perfectly obtainable for the experienced trekker.
